House Around Trees
Kollam, Kerala
The spaces of this house in southern Kerala are organized around the beautiful large trees which were existing on the site. The idea was to create a series of spaces that open out onto the green seamlessly. Water bodies add another layer, creating spaces that are one with nature. The design language is contemporary, yet retains its connection to the regional context.
The double-height space lets in plenty of filtered light through the wooden trellises and is given character by an installation of old temple bells which are hung from the ceiling. The formal living is organized around a beautiful water court, which has been on site. Traditional ‘Vilakkus’ are placed in the water to create an installation. Large verandahs and balconies create a layer of protection for the interiors and act as spill-out spaces.
